Greeks Abroad: Weekend Review
- Updated: October 30, 2012
From Dimitris Sialmas’ brace in Azerbaijan to Panagiotis Tachtsidis being sent-off in Rome, FootballHellas.com reviews the performances of all Greeks Abroad in football action across the continent this past weekend.
Dimitris Sialmas (Khazar Lankaran) — Scored both goals in his side’s 2-0 win over Qarabag. Will hope to continue his good form on Wednesday against Sumqayit.
Evangelos Mantzios (FC Baku) — Played the entire game as his side drew 0-0 with local rivals Inter Baku. Cautioned shortly before half-time. Likely to be in action again when his side take on AZAL midweek.
Jupiler Pro League
Giorgos Galitsios (Lokeren) — Played the entire 90 minutes of his side’s 3-2 win away to Club Brugge. Palyed solid defensively but picked up a late caution for a rough challenge.
Michalis Sifakis (Sporting Charleroi) — Has yet to play this season. Watched from the side-lines as his side managed a shock 2-0 win against title-favorites Anderlecht.
Ioannis Masmanidis (CS Visé) — Played the entire match as Visé held on for a 1-1 draw against Oudenaarde away from home.
Bulgarian A League
Ilias Kyriakidis (CSKA Sofia) — Out of the line-up with a knock. In attendance, however, as his side drew 1-1 with Botev Plovdiv.
Alexandros Tziolis (APOEL) — A late sub in his side’s 3-0 defeat of Nea Salamis away from home.
Apostolos Vellios (Everton) — On the bench for Everton as the Toffees drew 2-2 with local rivals Liverpool at Goodison Park.
Giorgos Karagounis (Fulham) — Was on the bench but didn’t feature as Fulham played out an exciting 3-3 draw with newly-promoted Reading at the Madejski Stadium.
Viktor Klonaridis (Lille) – Didn’t feature for the first team or its reserves following last weekend’s short stint in the top flight. Could return to action for Lille midweek when Les Dogues take on Toulouse in the Coupe de la Ligue.
Giorgos Tzavellas (Monaco) — Was not even on the bench as Monaco lost 2-0 to Nantes at the Stade Louis II. Is doubtful for his side’s midweek Coupe de la Ligue match with Troyes.
Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Schalke) — Continues to battle chicken pox but was in attendance at the Veltins Arena as Schalke edged Nuremberg 1-0. Papadopoulos could return to action on Tuesday when his side take on Sandhausen in the DFB Pokal.
Nikos Papadopoulos (Fortuna Dusseldorf) — Wasn’t part of the squad that lost 4-1 to Wolfsburg. His performances in training could help him win a first team spot, however, after Bayern notched five goals and Wolfsburg another four past regular starter Fabian Giefer.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Werder Bremen) — Gave a solid performance in the center of defense for Werder Bremen as his side played out a difficult 1-1 draw with Greuther Furth.
Sotiris Kyrgiakos (Wolfsburg) — Didn’t even make the bench as Wolfsburg stunned Fortuna Dusseldorf 4-1 at the ESPIRIT Arena in Dusseldorf.
Stelios Malezas (Fortuna Dusseldorf) — Continues to nurse an injury he picked up while on duty with the Greek National Team on 12 October. Was sorely missed as his side were walloped 4-1 at home by Wolfsburg.

Vassilis Pliatsikas (Schalke) — Has yet to play for Schalke this season and looks set to leave the club in the winter transfer window.
Giannis Papadopoulos (Dynamo Dresden) — Was left out of the line-up as Dynamo lost 3-2 to St. Pauli away from home.
Grigoris Makos (1860 Munich) — Was on the bench but didn’t feature as his side lost 1-0 to Energie Cottbus. Could return to action when 1860 take on Berliner AK ’07 in the DFB on Tuesday.
Kostas Fortounis (Kaiserslautern) — Played just over 80 minutes in Kaiserslautern’s 3-3 draw with FC Koln.
Dimitris Grammozis (VfL Bochum II) — Played the entire game as his side emerged 2-1 victors over Wuppertaler.
Ioannis Gelios (Augsburg II) — Started in goal for his side as Augsburg II beat Eintracht Bamberg 5-2. Gelios’ bid for a clean sheet was ruined by two late goals from the visitors.
Alexandros Tzorvas (Genoa) — Was a back-up for Genoa ‘keeper Sebastien Frey in his side’s 1-0 loss at the hands of Milan at the San Siro. Remained on the bench and has yet to feature in the Serie A this season.
Panagiotis Kone (Bologna) — Came on with about 8 minutes left in his side’s 3-1 loss to Inter Milan. Failed to make an impression on the game against a very strong Inter side.
Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Roma) — Sent-off in his side’s 3-2 loss at the hands of Udinese at the Stadio Olimpico. His dismissal came after he sarcastically applauded the referee, who was at the center of plenty of controversy on the night in Rome.
Sotiris Ninis (Parma) — Replaced at half-time by Marco Marchionni after failing to make an impact in the opening frame. Could return to action against Roma midweek.
Savvas Gentzoglou (Livorno) — A late second half replacement for Pasquale Schiatarella in his side’s 1-0 defeat of Cesena.
Vangelis Moras (Hellas Verona) — Played the entire 90 minutes of his side’s 2-0 win over Virtus Lanciano. A key figure in the Verona back-line as the Gialloblu picked up a third successive clean sheet.
Kostas Lambrou (Feyenoord) — Started in goal for Feyenoord as his side drew 2-2 with title-favourites Ajax.
Liga de Honra
Anastasios Tsoumagkas (Leixoes) — Was on the bench but didn’t feature as his side drew 1-1 with Belenenses.
Pantelis Kapetanos (CFR Cluj) — Unable to find the back of the net despite playing just over 80 minutes in his side’s 3-1 win over Turnu Severin.
Nikos Karelis (Amkar Perm) — An unused substitute in his side’s 2-1 win over Lokomotiv Moskva.
Giorgos Samaras (Celtic) – Not in the line-up after being injured in the midweek UEFA Champions League tilt away to Barcelona. Was needed in attack as his side lost 2-0 to Kilmarnock.
Anestis Argyriou (Rangers) — Made an appearance in the final eight minutes of his side’s 2-0 win over Clyde.
Nikos Karabelas (Levante) — An unused substitute as Levante managed a 3-1 win over Granada despite playing against Twente midweek in the UEFA Europa League.
